Giuli , Marco (2016) Turkish Stream back on the agenda? EPC Commentary, 1 September 2016. [Policy Paper]
Abstract
At a meeting on 9 August 2016 in St Petersburg, Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdoğan vowed to boost cooperation, following a significant cooling of relations. This has put the Turkish Stream gas pipeline back on the agenda. However, despite the political rapprochement between Moscow and Ankara, an increasingly complicated regional geopolitical environment should be taken into consideration in assessing the prospects for this project, says Marco Giuli. In this Commentary, he argues that Turkish Stream might go against Turkish ambitions of becoming a regional gas hub, and that the EU should capitalise on this in order to limit an undesirable growth of Turkey’s energy dependence on Russia.
