Abstract
In 1989, Hungary was widely seen as the most market-ready economy in eastern Europe. In terms of its per capita GDP, however, Hungary is yet to catch up to state socialist levels even after two decades, despite incorporation into theEuropean Union and sharply increased global and European trade flows..This article documents the dynamics of this process and argues that the great degree of external dependency of east-central European economies on west Schengen capital is a key factor thwarting their attempts at "catching up."
