Abstract

[From the Introduction]. One area of the environment which has become of great importance to the European Union (EU) is the coastal zone, which extends to over 90,000km, has an estimated 200 million people living within 50km of it and supports over 50% of Europe’s richest and most sensitive ecological areas.... The purpose of this introductory paper on the subject is to provide an overall look at the birth of ICZM within the EU’s framework and to give a glance at some of the policy areas playing major roles in ICZM. The ultimate aim is to catalyse public support to the goal of ICZM which according to recent studies on its potential socio-economic values, could be worth up to 4.2 billion EUROS for the EU as a whole. In this paper I will also show that implementation of ICZM strategies can cost little to the different Member states, but ultimately could generate significant returns.
