Abstract
Nowadays, the long-standing relationship between effective demand and unemployment seems to be fading into oblivion. Economic policies designed to boost the components of effective demand are conspicuous by their absence in nearly all European economies. This paper argues that policies tailored to boost effective demand can play an important role in reducing unemployment across Europe, as well as improving economic performance. An analytical framework has been developed which provides a basis for the empirical investigation. A panel data approach has been adopted for testing the hypothesis on 13 EU member states.
