    Abstract

    As part of a larger project that considers different reasons for the divergencein EU immigration policies, I focus in this paper on the role of domestic politics of immigration, and more specifically, on how governments of the Left in four EU member states (Germany, Britain, Spain, and Italy) haveresponded to the phenomenon of immigration over time. The politics ofimmigration in Europe are, at least partially, to be understood as partisan politics. And there are reasons to expect that parties of the Left faceparticularly difficult choices in responding to immigration.
