Abstract
This paper looks at the issue of the accountability of the European Central Bank (ECB) from the standpoint of its legitimacy. In this paper, I intend to propose that the different European polities in fact have different benchmarks of democracy, which in turn makes it especially difficult to find a common institutional model that would make the ECB legitimate.
