    Abstract

Looking at the Treaty on European Union and at the Treaty on its functioning (hereafter, respectively, TEU and TFEU) as re-structured after Lisbon 2007, 'old' and 'new' references can be found within both which confirm that the social dimension is still present and has to play a relevant role within European integration. In fact the new text of art. 3 (par. 3) reads: "The Union shall establish an internal market. It shall work for the sustainable development of Europe based on balanced economic growth and price stability, a highly competitive social market economy, aiming at full employment and social progress; (..) it shall combat social exclusion and discrimination, and shall promote social justice and protection; (..) it shall promote economic, social and territorial cohesion, and solidarity among Member States"1 (art. 3, par. 3 TEU).
