Abstract
Britain's efforts to leave the European Union are in trouble. At the press conference on 31 August after the third round of talks, Michel Barnier evinced his frustration: "The UK wants to take back control, it wants to adopt its own standards and regulations but it also wants to have these standards recognised automatically in the EU. That is what the UK papers ask for. This is simply impossible."
