Abstract
The papers gathered together in this volume were originally presented at a conference in September 1996, co-hosted by The Economic and Social Research Institute and the Foundation for Fiscal Studies. The theme of the conference was to examine the role of the tax/transfer system in providing income supports, while minimising negative consequences for work incentives - one of the issues highlighted in the recent report of the Expert Working Group on the Integration of the Income Tax and Social Welfare Systems (1996). The conference papers focused particularly on what could be learned from tax-benefit models, which deal with the consequences of tax and benefit policy changes at individual and family level; and on what could be learned by comparisons of the Irish and UK situations.
