Abstract
In 1990, the ESRI honoured me with an invitation to deliver the annual Geary Lecture honouring the memory of Dr Robert Charles Geary, the eminent statistician and social scientist and the first director of the Institute. l do not know whether I lived up to the expectations of my hosts, but I do know that their warm and generous hospitality, and the vivid interest in ideas and debate more than did justice to Ireland’s fame as a wonderful country.
