Abstract
in this chapter, I focus on two important dimensions of the consequences of 1989 as a major transformation in the ways in which the erstwhile socialist societies of eastern Europe integrated into the capitalist world economy. In contrast to the well-nigh exclusive focus of the literature on the impact of economic performance on per capita rates, I aim to open a debate on over-time trajectories in relative global economic weight (i.e., share in the world-economy). This reveals a truly new dimension of the contemporary plight of the region's societies.
