Abstract
[From the Introduction]. It has become increasingly obvious that 1989, the year communism collapsed, marked a watershed in world history. But it was not a watershed between an age of conflict, on the one hand, and an era of harmony and peace, on the other. The new age is as doubtful and dangerous as the old one, just different. It is one that will require not less, but more constructive cooperation between Europe and North America than before.
