    Abstract

In this introduction, we want to first make the case for the relevance of theory when studying European integration, which will be our concern in the remainder of this first section. In section two we then proceed to give a broad overview of the phases of theorising European integration, thereby surveying the theoretical approaches that we have included in this volume and providing our rationale for this particular selection. Section three introduces the comparative framework that provided the guide for the chapters. This will include a discussion of the nature of the relationships between theories, a theme that we return to in the conclusion of this book. Finally, building on this discussion, section four introduces the pattern of each [paper] and provides an overview of the book.
