Abstract
I consider it a great privilege to contribute to the series of lectures in honour of the great Irish statistician and economist Robert Charles Geary. He is respected not only as an outstanding scholar of mathematical statistics, but as a committed man of the social sciences, deeply interested in the problems of his own people, and in world affairs, in the social and economic issues of the past and of the present. Therefore I hope that it will not be out of place on this occasion, to talk about the dilemmas of a socialist system.
